General Description
The VSC6134 is a bidirectional transport processor providing forward error correction (FEC), SONET/SDH section
and line processing, 10 Gbps Ethernet performance monitoring and G.709 digital wrapper processing for fiber optic
transmission lines operating at ~10 Gbps. As recommended by ITU-T G.975 and G.709, VSC6134 provides FEC
function based on a block-oriented Reed Solomon code RS(255,239) in addition to an optional proprietary enhanced
FEC (EFEC) code that provides increased gain with the same overhead as RS(255,239). The required error
correction symbols are transferred out of band increasing the transmission data rate by ~7.6%. This provides a net
coding gain (accounting for bandwidth penalties) of better than 7.6 dB at 1x10E-12 corrected BER, and 8.6 dB at
1x10E-15 corrected BER. This compares to 6.3 dB at 1x10E-15 for G.709-compatible standard FEC.
As recommended by ITU-T G.709, in standard FEC mode, error coding is performed using a 16x interleaved,
block-oriented Reed Solomon RS (255,239) code, resulting in a maximum correctable burst error length of 1024 bits.
In the EFEC mode, different concatenated codes with iterative decoding are used to provide increased coding gain
performance. Due to the out of band transmission of the parity bits and framing/overhead information, the
transmission rate is increased by a factor of ~1.076 (compared to the OC-192 rate) in both standard and EFEC modes,
resulting in a ~10.709 Gbps transmission rate.
The VSC6134 FEC device is especially suitable for SONET/SDH applications as it supports monitoring and
generation of section overhead and line overhead for fiber optic transmission lines operating at OC-192 rate. 10 Gb
Ethernet applications are also supported through non-intrusive monitoring of the 64B/66B PCS encoded data at
10.3125 Gbps. The device meets IEEE and IETF Ethernet monitoring requirements for managed objects, MIB
objects, and RMON according to 802.3, RFC2665 and RFC2819.
