5.4.12 Considerations on PHY to PHY Connection
In applications with multiple EtherCAT slave controllers in one enclosed device or even on the same PCB, it
is not always necessary to connect the slave controllers via magnetics, RJ-45 connectors (or similar) and a
patch cable. Instead a direct backbone connection or traces on the PCB can be used to directly link the
PHYs, however coupling capacitors must be used in the connection.
This option reduces the cost as well as the required space in the setup.
Note
This connection method should be used only over short distances with no or few
connectors in between. It is not recommended for longer distances, especially
using a wired connection.
