General Description
The VSC8479-01 is the industry’s first comprehensive 10G-EPON burst mode transceiver solution with a fast-locking, integrated clock
and data recovery unit (CDR) and clock multiplier unit (CMU). The VSC8479-01 device delivers industry-leading power, performance,
programmability, feature integration, and cost-effective packaging ideal for even the most price-sensitive applications, such as PON and
cost-down designs.
Targeted for 300-pin multisource agreement (MSA) modules and DWDM line card applications, the VSC8479-01 is also suitable for
XFP/SFP+ motherboards with its proven interoperability with all major module vendors. Burst mode capability supports 10G-EPON
optical line terminal (OLT) units, and continuous mode operation supports optical network units (ONUs). The VSC8479-01 is the first 10G
transceiver to meet and exceed the 10G-EPON IEEE P802.3av/D3.0 Draft standard for burst mode performance.
The Rx path features a high-sensitivity receiver with programmable VGA and input bandwidth equalization (EQ) for stressed input data
eye compensation, and can acquire 10G-EPON data in under 100 ns. An external post amplifier is not required for most applications.
The high-speed output is swing- and pre-emphasis-programmable to support an array of laser driver and XFI/SFI host ASIC applications.
The VSC8479-01 device supports all features, functions, and clock modes required for 300-pin MSA transponder module full
compliance. All loopback modes are supported with multiple line timing clock modes. Low power dissipation enables 300-pin MSA
module vendors to provide performance and functionality advantages, while dropping the overall power dissipation in existing modules.
Highly flexible reference clock source selection and reference clock clean-up support schemes minimize external circuitry. A selectable
two-wire serial or serial peripheral interface (SPI) provides full microcontroller access to status and control registers, including software
read-back capability of external control input pins. Any combination of discrete pins and serial register status and control can be
employed. A selectable PRBS or user-defined pattern generator and error counter provides built-in self-testing and system analysis.
Robust crosstalk immunity enables the Tx and Rx paths to be operated asynchronously, while exceeding SONET jitter generation and
jitter tolerance requirements. The high-speed output clock can optionally be configured for higher performance applications. An
adjustable loss of signal (LOS) indicator is built-in for optical modulation amplitude monitoring. A flexible power supply scheme is
designed to operate on a single 1.8 V supply, with an optional 3.3 V I/O supply for 3.3 V compliant interfacing. The Tx and Rx paths can
also be powered down independently.
The compact 12 mm × 12 mm footprint and feature integration into a single device enables the VSC8479-01 to achieve impressive cost
and board size reductions required for price- and size-aggressive small form factor module applications.
