MASTER SYNCHRONOUS
SERIAL PORT (MSSP)
MODULE
The Master Synchronous Serial Port (MSSP) module is
a serial interface, useful for communicating with other
peripheral or microcontroller devices. These peripheral
devices may be serial EEPROMs, shift registers, dis-
play drivers, A/D converters, etc. The MSSP module
can operate in one of two modes:
• Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI)
• Inter-Integrated Circuit (I
2
C)
while Figure 9-5 and Figure 9-9 show the block dia-
grams for the two different I
2
C modes of operation.
The Application Note AN734, “Using the PICmicro
®
SSP for Slave I

TM
Communication” describes the
slave operation of the MSSP module on the
PIC16F87X devices. AN735, “Using the PICmicro
®
MSSP Module for I

C
TM
Communications” describes
the master operation of the MSSP module on the
PIC16F87X devices.
