Thermal Considerations
The power modules operate in a variety of thermal
environments; however, sufficient cooling should be
provided to help ensure reliable operation.
Considerations include ambient temperature, airflow,
module power dissipation, and the need for increased
reliability. A reduction in the operating temperature of
the module will result in an increase in reliability. The
thermal data presented here is based on physical
measurements taken in a wind tunnel.
The thermal reference points, T

in the specifications for open frame modules are
shown in Figures 13a and 13b. For reliable operation

these temperatures should not exceed 125 C, 110 C

and 105 C respectively.

The module can also be used in a sealed environment
with cooling via conduction from the module’s top
surface through a gap pad material to a cold wall, as
shown in Figure 16. The output current derating
versus cold wall temperature, when using a gap pad
such as Bergquist GP2500S20, is shown in Figure 17.
